We’ve all done it—clicked on an email attachment we thought we’d received from a friend and unleashed a virus on our computers. What to do? Well, ideally you’ll have some kind of security program already installed on your computer to catch viruses and malware, but it might not be updated for the newest threats. If you take to the Internet, though, you can find free virus removal for almost any problem.
If you have a PC, surf to Microsoft Security to download their free Malicious Software Removal Tool. The tool is updated each month to protect you against the newest security threats. You can usually find it on your automatic Microsoft and Windows updates, but if you don’t already have it, you can download it directly.
Bit Defender allows you to browse about 75 distinct tools to remove specific viruses and malware. The tools are free, but if you like what they do, there is also a section on the website that offers Bit Defender security products for sale.
AVG is similar to Bit Defender in that it allows you to browse and download tools to remove a specific virus that is harming your computer. AVG offers solutions for about 40 current viruses.
Although these free downloads can help you get rid of the newest and most common viruses, they are no substitute for having a good security program installed on your computer. The better the security you have, the less chance you will download a virus to start with. And when it comes to computers, an ounce of prevention is worth well more than a pound of cure.
